Do backlinks matter for AI search and AEO

The Short Answer: Yes, But Differently

Backlinks remain relevant for AI search visibility, but the mechanism is different from how Google uses them.

In Google's algorithm, backlinks are primarily a ranking signal. More high-quality backlinks generally mean higher rankings. The link itself is the signal.

In AI search, backlinks matter because of what they represent: third-party validation. AI models do not count your backlinks the way Google does. Instead, they synthesise information from multiple sources, and content that is referenced by authoritative sites is treated as more credible.

How AI Models Use Link Signals

When an AI model evaluates whether to recommend your business, it looks at the breadth and quality of your online mentions. A business that is mentioned on industry publications, news sites, and authoritative blogs has a stronger entity profile than one that exists only on its own website.

These mentions do not need to be hyperlinks. AI models can recognise brand mentions in text even without a clickable link. A news article that mentions your company by name contributes to your AI visibility whether or not it links to your website.

That said, linked mentions are still more valuable because the AI can follow the link to learn more about your business from your own website. A mention without a link is a signal. A mention with a link is a signal plus a path to more information.

What This Means for Link Building

Traditional link building tactics (guest posts, directory submissions, link exchanges) still have value, but the emphasis should shift.

Focus on earning mentions on authoritative, topically relevant sites rather than accumulating high volumes of low-quality links. One mention in an industry publication that AI models consider authoritative is worth more than 50 links from generic directories.

Focus on content that earns natural mentions. Original research, data, frameworks, and tools get cited by other sites naturally. Our own five-dimension audit framework, for example, is designed to be useful enough that other sites reference it.

Focus on review platforms. For local businesses, reviews on Google, industry-specific platforms, and social media function as a form of third-party validation that AI models weight heavily.

What Matters More Than Backlinks for AEO

For most Singapore SMBs, backlinks are not the highest-priority AEO lever. The higher-impact actions are structured data implementation, comprehensive content creation, entity recognition strengthening, and FAQ optimisation.

If your structured data is thin and your content is minimal, improving backlinks will not move the needle on AI visibility. Fix the foundation first, then build the external signals.

Our five-dimension framework helps you identify where to focus. For most businesses, structured data and content authority are dimensions 1 and 2 in priority, with citation signals (including backlinks) coming third.
