The Pricing Problem in AI Services

Ask any AI receptionist vendor how much their service costs and you will get one of three answers. A per-minute rate. A per-call rate. Or "contact us for a quote." All three are designed to make comparison shopping difficult.

Per-minute pricing sounds cheap until you realise a typical business call lasts three to four minutes. A rate of $0.50 per minute becomes $2.00 per call, which becomes $1,200 per month at 20 calls per day. Per-call pricing hides the fact that some calls are 30 seconds (a wrong number) and some are 5 minutes (a complex booking). And "contact us for a quote" usually means the price depends on how much the salesperson thinks you can afford.

What Pass-Through Pricing Means

Swop Labs uses a different model. We separate our service fee from the underlying infrastructure costs, and we show you both.

The infrastructure cost is what the voice AI platform, telephony provider, and language models actually charge to process your calls. This is a variable cost that depends on call volume and duration. We pass this through to you at the exact rate we pay, with no markup.

The service fee is a flat monthly charge for setup, customisation, ongoing tuning, support, and the expertise that makes the AI actually work for your specific business. This is where we make our money, and we are upfront about it.

The result is that you can see exactly what you are paying for. You know how much goes to infrastructure and how much goes to our service. If infrastructure costs drop (which they have been doing consistently as AI gets cheaper), your bill drops automatically.

Why Other Vendors Do Not Do This

Three reasons. First, infrastructure markup is a significant profit centre for most AI vendors. The difference between what they pay and what they charge can be 300 to 500 percent. Showing the actual cost would make that margin visible.

Second, opaque pricing makes it harder for customers to compare services. If Vendor A charges $0.60 per minute and Vendor B charges $3.50 per call, most business owners cannot tell which is cheaper without doing maths they do not have time for.

Third, many vendors bundle everything together because their service layer is thin. If they separated infrastructure from service, customers would see that they are mostly paying for a resold API with minimal customisation on top.

What This Means for You

For a typical Singapore service business receiving 20 to 40 calls per day, the difference between pass-through pricing and marked-up pricing adds up to hundreds of dollars per month. Over a year, that difference can cover an entire month of service.

More importantly, pass-through pricing aligns our incentives with yours. We do not benefit from your calls being longer or more frequent. We benefit from you being happy enough with our service to keep paying the flat monthly fee and to recommend us to other business owners.

How to Compare Pricing Properly
